With the UK in lockdown and all of us being asked to ‘Stay at Home’ other than for essential reasons (to buy food, visit a GP, collect medicine and, at the time of writing this, for daily exercise), what better time to catch up on some podcasts.

With our focus on vision impairment and disability, I (Dave) have selected a few podcasts that I subscribe too that I think you might find interesting. Obviously, they’re not all going to be to everyone’s taste (and are slightly skewed towards vision impairment as I am blind myself) but there should be something that is of interest to you.

So, in no particular order, have a search and listen to the following podcasts; they’re available on most podcast apps including Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, BBC Sounds, AudioBoom, Spotify and Stitcher to name but a few.

  • Double Tap Canada
Double Tap Canada is the show where blind people talk tech! If you’re blind or partially sighted and have an interest in technology, this is the show for you. Everyone is welcome no matter how old you are or how much or how little experience you have with technology. Each week the team will help you better understand how technology can help your everyday life, even if you have little or no sight.

  • Mosen At Large
Jonathan Mosen MNZM is a Chief Executive, advocate, entrepreneur, technology expert and broadcaster. Direct from his studio in Wellington New Zealand, Jonathan talks about anything that takes his fancy, from technology to music to politics to disability issues and much more. And listeners love to talk back. It's a captivating listen in which you can be informed, entertained, amused, in strong agreement and strong frustration all in one episode.

  • Life After Blindness
Tim Schwartz presents a blog and podcast dedicated to the exploration of an enabled life with blindness.

  • RNIB Tech Talk
Tech Talk is a podcast and radio show for blind and partially sighted people who are interested in accessible technology. Find out about the latest from specialist equipment to off the shelf solutions.

  • Dot to Dot
A daily 5min Echo demo from Alexa. These short top tips and skills for the Amazon Echo are for everyone who’s simply dotty about Alexa.

  • Blind Bargains Audio
The biggest names, the latest news, and leading insights from the field. Weekly Podcasts, interviews, technology demonstrations, and commentary from industry experts.

  • BBC Ouch
The place where the real disability talk happens. Interviews, life hacks and things you don't say out loud. With Simon Minty, Kate Monaghan and the Ouch team.

  • AppleVIS
AppleVis offers a wide range of podcasts covering topics of interest to blind and low-vision users of Apple Devices. Featured topics include walk-throughs and demonstrations of apps, tips on using iOS and Mac OS X, and accessory reviews.

If there are other vision impairment or disability related podcasts that you like and we’ve not mentioned, then please let us know; we’re always keen to learn about podcasts that we’ve not heard about or know of.

We’re always interested to know about other people’s experiences and thoughts. Please share these by commenting…

    Our VIDA Insights...

Following our experiences from delivering our Vision Impairment Awareness training days over the past couple of years, we know that there’s loads more that we could talk about and examples we could have shared. Whilst these won’t be a substitute for our training, they will give you an insight (hence the name!) into our thoughts, observations and experiences from each of our perspectives - Dave’s living with sight loss and Vicky’s from being a sighted person and working alongside and supporting people who have sight loss.

We recognise some of you won’t agree with us or will have your own opinions or comments – after all, as we say loads during our training, everyone is an individual! If you have any comments or thoughts about our ‘Insights’ in particular that you’d like to add, we would love you to share them with us!
