Hi everyone and Happy New Year to you all!
Dave and I (Vicky) are hoping the new year will enable us to provide more in person training as COVID restrictions become less of a threat and more of a memory (am I speaking too soon?). That said, we provided many training sessions over Zoom in 2021 which was a first for us but well received by all and we facilitated several in person training sessions towards the end of the year as Covid restrictions relaxed. In addition to our regular Vision Impairment and Disability Awareness training sessions, we also worked with Kings College London on making a comic book (to be used in training by NHS Scotland) accessible for people with a vision impairment and provided a few pre-employment consultation sessions for an individual.
Our biggest project in 2021 was providing a 12 week pre-employment course for people with vision impairments. This course was commissioned by TAVIP (Technology Association of Visually Impaired People) and we collaborated with Gary from Gary Eady Computer Training to deliver this project. Although originally commissioned to be delivered in person, due to the pandemic and restrictions, we successfully facilitated this virtually via Zoom.
Some feedback from last year’s training sessions:
From our ‘virtual’ Vision Impairment Awareness Training sessions for a local VI charity:
“Due to not being able to do in-person training, we did it on zoom. It was really good and I learnt so much. It was interesting and gave a lot of information that I believe is needed for my role. (understanding, overview on equipment etc).”
“I loved the visual element to see how people are affected by different types of sight loss. The training was excellent. Both trainers were very down to earth. Relaxed and comfortable asking questions. Thank you.”
From our ‘virtual’ Disability Awareness Training sessions for a pan-disability charity:
“The frank and open exchanges of individual experiences gave me thought on how I could improve the way I deal with current situations I find myself in.”
“Thought provoking session. The content about stigma and assumptions about life with a disability was interesting.”
From our pre-employment training course for people with vision impairments:
“Thank you so much for all the amazing help and advice that you provided during the course. It has been most valuable.”
“I just wanted to let you know that earlier today I received a job offer…Once again thank you for facilitating the course and for giving me the knowledge and confidence to feel able to apply for a role which, to be perfectly honest, was probably out of my comfort zone.”
From our ‘in-person’ Vision Impairment Awareness Training sessions with different care homes:
“Explained some of the things I never understood about vision impairment”.
“Very relaxed learning environment”.
“Really appreciated Dave’s personal experiences and Vicky’s patience and understanding”.
“Training presentation was very good and will improve our knowledge. I would like to join more training like this”.

Our VIDA Insights...
Following our experiences from delivering our Vision Impairment Awareness training days over the past couple of years, we know that there’s loads more that we could talk about and examples we could have shared. Whilst these won’t be a substitute for our training, they will give you an insight (hence the name!) into our thoughts, observations and experiences from each of our perspectives - Dave’s living with sight loss and Vicky’s from being a sighted person and working alongside and supporting people who have sight loss.
